PRESENTATION
The Doctoral research programme in Art History, developed within the framework of a cooperation agreement between the University of Siena and the University for Foreigners in Siena, focuses on advanced studies rooted in a city and a territory with an extraordinary artistic heritage, the correct preservation, conservation and promotion of which calls for increasingly analytical knowledge.
The doctoral programme includes training pathways in areas of Medieval Art History, Modern Art History and Contemporary Art History. Programmes include the study of works in their dual nature as material and cultural products, the dynamics of creation and reception, their physical and conservation history, their critical and collection history, and their promotion and fruition.
The strength of this educational pathway stems from the territorial vocation, social, political and economic history, complexity and cultural richness of Italian and European cities, which have made them driving forces of exchanges, offering endless cues for modern research centred on manifold aspects of historical-artistic studies.
Professors and researchers from the two affiliated universities, the University of Siena and the University for Foreigners in Siena, take part in the Doctoral research programme in Art History. The Board is also open to professors from other Italian and foreign universities and to experts with extensive experience in the field of scientific research, as well as in conservation and promotion, who are members of qualified national and international cultural institutions.
The doctoral programme in Art History aims to train individuals capable of interacting easily both in the world of basic research and with the national and international professional community, serving as leading figures in the production and dissemination of knowledge and scientific understanding in the field of artistic heritage, a prerequisite for conservation, preservation and promotion activities.
